HIV/AIDS drugs that have been used for the last 30 years could be used to treat age-related macular degeneration (AMD), according to a study partially supported by unrestricted funds from Research to Prevent Blindness (abstract). The researchers believe the finding could result in a cheap and effective treatment for wet or dry AMD patients because the drugs are already approved by the FDA.
